Why is Data Privacy Important?

We are seeing technologies being embedded within all aspects of our lives, within our cities, homes and pockets. These interactions create large amounts of data which are captured by organisations and governments. There are potential benefits to collecting increasing amounts of data, but it also increases the level of privacy risks to individuals such as data being sold or exploited, being stolen and an increase in surveillance and monitoring. We propose there is a need to better support people to understand their data practices, the risks of sharing their data and providing them with advice and resources on how to protect themselves.

The conversations around data privacy do not normally involve people from more marginalised groups. Although they face more data privacy challenges and risks, their needs and experience are not included in the design of support and advice. We have partnered with two community organisations who are led by and support people from minority ethnic communities, Datakirk and Amina, with the aim of exploring current and future data support through a series of participatory workshops. Together we co-designed a set of speculative data support services around their experiences and needs, to create the Citizens Data Agency.
